Shyamendra Singh

Advisory Board Member
Eco-Tourism, Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Agriculture
A conservationist and responsible-tourism pioneer with over 40 years of experience integrating wildlife tourism, biodiversity conservation, agro forestry and community livelihoods.
Shri Shyamendra Singh, hailing from Nagod in Madhya Pradesh, was raised on a farm adjoining the rich forests of Central India. His early years in this natural landscape shaped a lifelong connection with wildlife, forests, farming systems and rural communities. His love for nature took root in childhood and later evolved into a deep professional commitment to eco tourism, biodiversity conservation, agro forestry and sustainable agriculture.
At the age of five, he was sent to Welham Preparatory School in Dehradun, followed by his schooling at Mayo College, Ajmer. After graduating from Bhopal, he explored diverse professional fields including hospitality, sales and advertising. These experiences gave him a strong understanding of people, communication, service delivery and enterprise development. However, his true calling drew him back to the wilderness and to the conservation landscapes of Central India.
Shri Singh established his first wildlife lodge in Panna, a region closely connected to his personal journey and professional vision. He later went on to co-found Pugdundee Safaris, which has grown into one of India’s respected responsible tourism companies. With over 40 years of experience, he has contributed significantly to the development of nature based tourism models that combine hospitality, conservation awareness, local livelihoods and low impact operations.
His work in eco tourism has focused on creating meaningful and responsible visitor experiences that go beyond conventional wildlife tourism. Through carefully curated nature stays, guided interpretation, eco trails and community linked tourism activities, he has helped promote a deeper understanding of forests, wildlife habitats, local culture and rural landscapes. His approach has consistently emphasized that tourism must support conservation, respect local communities and generate benefits for people living around protected areas.
Shri Shyamendra Singh has also been actively associated with biodiversity conservation and eco trail development. His field experience across forest fringe areas has enabled him to understand the ecological importance of native vegetation, wildlife corridors, traditional knowledge systems and community stewardship. He has supported initiatives that encourage nature education, guided forest walks, birding trails, interpretation based tourism and awareness around the protection of fragile ecosystems.
A strong believer in the integration of conservation and livelihoods, Shri Singh has consistently worked with local communities to create dignified income opportunities. Through employment, training and skill building at his lodges and associated initiatives, he has supported local youth and families in building careers in hospitality, guiding, naturalist services, field operations and rural enterprise. His work reflects the belief that conservation becomes stronger when local communities are active participants and direct beneficiaries.
In addition to tourism and conservation, Shri Singh has a deep interest in agro forestry, eco friendly farming and sustainable agriculture. Coming from a farming background, he understands the relationship between land, soil, water, trees, crops and rural livelihoods. His work encourages farming practices that respect ecological balance, improve soil health, promote tree based landscapes and reduce pressure on forests. His interest in sustainable agriculture is rooted in the idea that rural prosperity and environmental restoration must move together.
Today, Shri Shyamendra Singh continues to inspire through his holistic approach to nature, communities and sustainable livelihoods. His journey brings together wildlife tourism, biodiversity conservation, eco trails, agro forestry and sustainable agriculture into a practical model of responsible rural development. His life’s work stands as a strong example of how conservation, enterprise and community empowerment can come together to create long term ecological and social impact.
