Reusable cloth bags, produced to replace single-use plastic

School of Livelihood and Rural Development has produced more than 50,000 cloth bags to move households and shops away from single-use plastic bags and towards reusable cloth. Of those, 10,000 were supported by the Government of Meghalaya under the Chief Minister’s Plastic Challenge, sponsored by Max Cement and Star Cement.

SLRD also led the project to set up a plastic waste recycling unit in South West Garo Hills in 2019, now operated by a village committee.

Why cloth bags sit inside a waste programme

Three results from one bag

1

Handle the plastic already here

The recycling unit deals with the plastic that is already in circulation across the district.

2

Stop the next one entering

A reusable cloth bag replaces the single-use plastic bag before it is ever handed out.

3

Income where the bags are made

Producing the bags locally makes the stitching work itself an income for the women’s groups who sew them.
