Dhanshreeghat, Udalguri — Farming communities in Udalguri are exploring new ways to improve farm incomes while making better use of local resources. The School of Livelihood and Rural Development (SLRD) has started working with local farmer institutions on two key areas: aromatic crop cultivation and an Integrated Circular Economy Program.
Starting with the Community
The work began with discussions involving the Thalua Krishi Banijya O Shram Niyog Bahumukhi Samabai Samiti Limited, its Board of Directors, and members of the cooperative.
The discussions focused on introducing high-value aromatic crops that are suitable for the local agro-climatic conditions. The conversation also looked beyond cultivation — towards what happens to agricultural residues after harvest and how these resources can be put to better use.
The proposed circular economy approach includes biochar production, biofertilizers, and sustainable agroforestry. Together, these can help improve soil health, reduce waste, and create additional livelihood opportunities for farmers.
SLRD is working with partners including YesEarth and Vistaar Agrotech to support this work and build connections between farmers, technology, processing, and markets.
From Discussion to Partnership
The discussions have now led to a formal partnership.
On July 24, 2026, SLRD signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Thalua Krishi Banijya O Shram Niyog Bahumukhi Samabai Samiti Limited in Darrang.
The partnership will focus on technical support, infrastructure development, and market linkages to help farmers take up aromatic crops and develop circular agriculture-based activities.
The larger aim is to build a farming system where agricultural resources are used more efficiently, soil health receives greater attention, and farmers have access to new opportunities for income and value addition.
With the community at the centre, SLRD and its partners are taking practical steps towards more sustainable and resilient agriculture in Udalguri.
