LivingRoots – Fashion committed to social, economic and environmental sustainability

Fashion and sustainability are two concepts that have gained significant attention in recent years. Traditionally, the fashion industry has been associated with a range of environmental and social issues, including excessive waste, pollution, and labor exploitation. However, there is growing awareness and a shift towards more sustainable practices and ethical production methods within the fashion industry.

Sustainability in fashion refers to the adoption of environmentally friendly and socially responsible practices throughout the entire lifecycle of a garment, from design and production to consumption and disposal. It involves minimizing the negative impacts on the environment, conserving resources, promoting fair labor conditions, and ensuring the well-being of communities involved in the fashion supply chain.

“Fashion committed to social, economic and environmental sustainability” project initiated by Anubha Baluapuri, Director, School of Livelihood and Rural Development (SLRD)

Anubha explains the concept of LivingRoots सृजन | संरक्षण | सचेतन (CREATE|CONSERVE|CONSCIOUS).

सृजन | CREATE

Create in sync with nature

Fashion needs to be created with a more sustainable approach, which is circular rather than linear. We are committed to creating fashion with minimum dependence on virgin materials. LivingRoots सृजन | संरक्षण | सचेतन, believes in a fashion industry focused on waste and pollution reduction, in keeping products and materials in use for as long as possible, including through reusing, upcycling, and recycling, and returning them to the biosphere safely once they are no longer for human use.

संरक्षण | CONSERVE

Conserve our resources

The “take-make-dispose” model of fast fashion industry is big business, but it is killing the planet. It relies on large quantities of fast depleting natural resources and energy, which is making the industry more and more unfit for the reality in which it operates. It is putting enormous strain on traditional textile industry, impacting huge numbers of handloom weavers, artisans, and producers. Many tradition techniques are dying out due to the impact of fast fashion business.

LivingRoots is committed to creating an impact-driven business, which places a high value on social, economic, and environmental sustainability. Going by the mantra of conserve and nurture, we support maximum use of traditional handlooms to make recycled yarns into high-quality fabrics, and promote traditional fabric recycling, upcycling, and reuse techniques like Khesh weaving and Kantha textiles. Our business model is locally embedded and culturally relevant, aimed to create fashion, which is fusion of contemporary design, traditional techniques, environment friendly production, humane approach, and a celebration of brilliant craftsmanship.

सचेतन | CONSCIOUS

Conscious of our impact on environment, society and fellow being LivingRoots is committed to making fashion which is conscious of all the inputs and processes that go into making our clothing – natural, human, animal. Our model is of minimum-waste fashion prioritizes used, up-cycled, and recycled materials while minimizing waste in the production process.
Our end goal is to create fashion that, protect the welfare of all players in the game and help to maintain healthy, balanced, and biodiverse ecosystemsso we can all sustain and thrive into the future.
