SLRD Discusses Integrated Agroforestry and Rural Livelihood Initiative with Government of Assam

An insightful discussion with Smt. Aruna Rajoria, IAS, Agriculture Production Commissioner, Government of Assam on sustainable agriculture and farmer-led enterprises in Assam

Mr. Abhijit Sharma, Director General of the School of Livelihood and Rural Development (SLRD), along with Scientific Officer Ms. Kasturi Goswami, recently met Smt. Aruna Rajoria, Agriculture Production Commissioner, Government of Assam, to discuss a major initiative aimed at promoting sustainable rural livelihoods and climate-resilient development in Assam.

The initiative proposes the establishment of five large integrated units in partnership with local Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs). These units will focus on agroforestry, biochar production, biofertiliser manufacturing, and essential oil extraction, creating an integrated model for sustainable agriculture and rural enterprise development.

The project is expected to benefit more than 5,000 farmers by generating sustainable livelihood opportunities, encouraging value addition, and strengthening farmer-led enterprises. It also seeks to restore degraded and deforested hilly landscapes through agroforestry interventions and watershed development activities.

A key focus of the initiative is to improve soil health through the use of biochar and biofertilisers while building long-term climate resilience for rural communities. By integrating ecological restoration with income generation, the model aims to create a scalable and replicable framework for sustainable development across Assam and the North East.

During the interaction, Smt. Aruna Rajoria shared valuable guidance and expressed her support for the proposed Farmer Producer Company-run units. Her encouragement is expected to contribute significantly towards advancing the initiative and strengthening collaborative efforts for sustainable rural transformation in the region.
